16th October 2012
Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, Anthony Lawlor, is urging everyone across Kildare to make sure that they are on the Electoral Register to vote in the Children’s Referendum on Saturday, November 10th. The closing date to get your name added to the Supplementary Register is October the 23rd.
“For decades we have had a legacy of failing our country’s children; for decades we have had a legacy of neglect, abuse and inequality; this referendum is the clearest statement the nation can make that this legacy is being left behind. I am urging you all to make your voices heard and send a strong message that we as a society value our children and want to offer them the greatest possible protection.
“The Children’s Referendum being held on a Saturday will make it easier for students and those working irregular hours to cast their vote. I am encouraging everyone to take full advantage of a Saturday polling, and to get behind this Children’s Referendum.
“You can check if you are on the register by contacting Kildare County Council or on www.checktheregister.ie. These sources can also provide you with an application form for the Supplementary Register, for which the deadline for inclusion is October 23rd. Do not forget to bring ID when you go to get your form signed in the presence of a member of the Gardaí.
“This Referendum is almost 20 years in waiting: after 17 reports on child protection failings now is your chance to make a difference to how children are treated in Ireland. I believe we must make a statement about ourselves as a society, to show we have learnt from past failings and to ensure the protection and safety of children. I am urging everyone in Kildare North to play their part in this referendum and get out and vote on November 10th.”
