Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, Anthony Lawlor, welcomes the news that the Phoenix Park Train Tunnel – linking Heuston Station to Connolly Station – will be in use for regular passenger services from June 2016.

“This 7km tunnel, which has two tracks, was built in 1872 but has only ever been used as a service line for Irish Rail. Work is currently underway to make this route accessible for regular commuter trains and will greatly enhance the transport infrastructure in the city. The opening up of this tunnel will connect western commuter lines with the city centre and south bound trains with Tara Street Station, Pearse Street Station, Grand Canal Dock etc.

“Currently commuters from Kildare can only get the train to Heuston Station and then they need to take an alternative mode of transport, either a bus or the Luas, to get to the city centre. This new line will now bring commuters to the heart of the city and to the IFSC for workers in the area.

“This project is just one of many announced by this Government which will be of huge benefit to Dublin City Centre and the surrounding commuter counties. Work is currently underway for the Cross City Luas Line which will see the Maynooth Train Line connected with the Luas at Broombridge, bringing passengers all the way to St Stephen’s Green and beyond. I am personally looking forward to using the new Phoenix Park tunnel and experiencing for the first time this little known transport treasure of Dublin”.
