Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, Deputy Anthony Lawlor, welcomes Minister Alex White’s National Broadband Plan saying that it is a much needed intervention for rural Ireland and will meet this Government’s commitment to address the poor broadband issues experienced by Kildare residents.
“Until now urban areas have been relatively well served by commercial operators but it has been unviable for operators to deliver high speed broadband to more remote areas. Under this plan, a state intervention will apply in these areas to build a network capable of providing broadband with speeds of at least 30Mbps which will ensure a reliable broadband service to all”.
As part of the consultation process national and county maps have been published online together with a consultation document, which can be accessed at www.broadband.gov.ie The maps identify the homes, businesses and schools where commercial providers will deliver high-speed broadband access by the end of 2016.
“I would encourage people experiencing poor broadband services to engage in this consultation process. It is important that this plan addresses the urban rural divide we currently have in relation to broadband services. Adequate broadband should and will be available to all regardless of where you live and this is important not only for both home usage, but also to allow rural businesses to thrive”.
