Anthony Lawlor, Fine Gael TD for Kildare North, welcomes the announcement today (Friday) by Minister for Transport, Paschal Donohoe TD, that funding has been allocated to complete the Greenway route from Maynooth to Mullingar.

“This commitment to connect Maynooth to Mullingar is a great boast for tourism and sporting enthusiasts in the Maynooth and wider Kildare North area. The Greenway routes throughout the country have been a huge success and are widely used by pedestrians, cyclists and runners. They are a great draw for tourism and highlight the beauty of our canal system.

The funding allocated for this Greenway is part of the greater project to connect Dublin to Galway. The funding was originally ear marked for the Galway/Roscommon segment of the route but
due to the eagerness by Government to deliver the Dublin to Galway Greenway, a decision has been made to pause the Galway/Roscommon segment of the route and to progress the Kildare/Meath section, which is shovel ready, instead.

It is anticipated that this segment of the Greenway will be completed in 2017 and I look forward to seeing the benefits for the wider community”.
