Senator Anthony Lawlor kicks off National Fitness Day with football, hurling and boxing

He is no stranger to running for election, but Kildare Senator Anthony Lawlor has upped his fitness goals by taking part in a game of Fine Gaelic to mark National Fitness Day.

Before throw in, a sparring session with Olympic medallist Kenneth Egan packed a political punch and helped limber up Senator Anthony Lawlor for the games ahead.

Cúl heads were required as the representatives battled against the clock to rack up the most points on the Fine Gaelic leaderboard.

Special events are taking place in schools, workplaces and communities across the country today [ Thursday] to mark National Fitness Day.

The initiative is dedicated to celebrating physical activity in Ireland and encouraging more people to get more active, more often.

Research shows if you exercise with friends you are more likely to stick at it; the social atmosphere creates a positive environment which importantly helps us to have fun.

Keeping fit is not just for the young, it’s for all ages and abilities, even if just going for a walk.
